Last year I heard this phrase, “The Great Lock-In,” and I don’t know, I started thinking about what it meant. The whole thing was straightforward, almost too straightforward. Focus through the end of the year. That’s it. No wandering off. No telling yourself you’ll start when the timing’s better. Just attention. Consistent, focused attention on the things that matter to you

But as the new year begins, I’ve been thinking about why that focus should stop when the calendar changes. Right now, we’re all flooded with Instagram motivation about New Year’s resolutions. Start fresh. New year, new you. Crush your goals. But what if we took another approach?
The beginning of the year is actually a natural reset. A chance to catch our breath before we dive back in. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do for ourselves is rest first, then begin. The Great Lock-In isn’t about pushing until we break. It’s about sustainable focus that actually lasts.
For me, that focus is going deeper into the capabilities of Power BI and going further into my Fabric journey. Last fall, I realized with work that I was no longer in the continuous improvement loop. I wasn’t taking the time to get better. The Great Lock-In became my reminder to take that seriously.
Here’s what that looks like for me:

- Getting back to basics: I’m revisiting core concepts and building from there.
- More community involvement: My Saturday Morning Learning group keeps me grounded, and I’m committing to showing up more.
- Taking actual time for hands-on practice: Not just watching tutorials. Actually building things, making mistakes, and figuring it out.
The Great Lock-In doesn’t belong to one season. You don’t need a Monday, a new month, or a new year to begin. You can start right where you are.

If you’ve been thinking about sharpening your skills, this is your reminder. The Great Lock-In isn’t only how you finish strong. It’s also how you begin strong. One step at a time, with grace for yourself along the way.
